The final 4 has been set for the 2018 MHSAA 11 team football playoffs in each division and in Division 4 Region 3 and 4 matchups two teams with similar styles who will be playing each other for the very first time in their respective school’s histories. The Chelsea Bulldogs (Region 4) will be facing off against the Williamston Hornets (Division 3) on Saturday the 17th at 1 p.m. in the mutual site of Walled Lake Northern High School.
The Hornets rolled into the playoffs with a 7-2 regular season record and have come alive at the right time as they have rattled off 3 very impressive victories scoring 94 points and giving up just 35. Their only two losses on the season were to St. Johns and to 2016 and 2017 state champions Pewamo- Westphalia by one point.
The Bulldogs finished 6-3 in the regular season with losses to Jackson, Ypsilanti Lincoln, and Alpena. The Bulldogs had to take a bit of a rougher road to get here playing all 3 of their games on the road outscoring their opponents 84-49.
Both teams match up evenly as Williamston has scored 351 points on the season while surrendering 190. The Bulldogs have put up 346 to 195 against. Other similarities include the fact both teams recently have been to the state championship game., Williamston in 2010 when they were defeated by perennial powerhouse Grand Rapids Catholic Central, and Chelsea in 2015 when they were defeated by Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. This is only the second semifinal for each team.
The winner of the game will go to Ford Field on Friday, November 23rd at 7:30 P.M to play for the championship against the winner of the Grand Rapids Catholic Central (11-1)-Edwardsburg (12-0) matchup.
