Columbus, Ohio- The Ohio State women’s basketball team got off to a slow start Friday night over Detroit Mercy but finished very strong in the second half for a huge 55-41 victory getting their first victory of the season to even their record at 1-1.
The new look team is still trying to find its place and the players are trying to gel with one another and as the game went on it looked like the connections were being made. When you graduate 5 of the greatest players to ever play at Ohio State or even in the NCAA including Kelsey Mitchell, the only 4 time All-American in Buckeye history, that’s going to happen.
But Ohio State Head Coach Kevin McGuff, along with his assistants Patrick Klein, Carrie Banks, and Jennifer Sullivan, has done a great job assembling a new team.
Dorka Juhász, the freshman from Hungary, recorded her second double-double in as many games with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Her fellow freshman Aaliyah Patty, a Chicago Land 4 star recruit, scored a game-high 16 points to go along with three blocks and four rebounds.
Point guard Carmen Grande dished-out seven assists and has eclipsed the 700 career assist mark, making her all-time active leader in assist in the NCAA, between both men and women. Najah Queenland also had a good all-around game going 3-of-3 from the floor for six points with seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Detroit Mercy held a slight lead after the first quarter but the Buckeyes started hot in the second quarter and with a deep three-point shot from Junior Jensen Caretti the Buckeyes took a 28-21 lead into the locker room at the half. In the second half, the Buckeyes held Mercy to just 33% shooting while dominating them on the boards. The Buckeye bench was a huge contributing factor as they scored 31 points to Mercy’s zero.
Caretti, the former Miss Basketball of Ohio would finish with 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots.
After the impressive victory three members of last years Big Ten Championship team, Jensen Caretti, Savitha Jayaraman, and Makayla Waterman, were in the lobby signing autographs for the fans along with freshman Aaliyah Patty.
The Buckeyes will hit the road for the first time this season as they will face the number 2 team in the nation, UConn in Gampel Pavilion on Sunday at Noon. The game will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
