Ohio State Women’s Soccer Splits Games In Michigan

The Ohio State Women’s soccer team headed north and taking on Michigan Friday night then traveled to face off against the Michigan State Spartans Sunday afternoon. Friday was a wet day as it rained most of the day in Ann Arbor but the Buckeyes were not hindered by the wet field as the played a tough defensive game in front of their arch-rivals. Backed by many Buckeyes in the crowd they took advantage of many opportunities but just couldn’t find the break they needed.

Senior goalkeeper Devon Kerr made many great saves in the first half and at the 22-minute mark, it appeared the Wolverines had scored but Kerr’s teammate Haley Walker-Robinson used her great defensive skills and was able to clear the ball at the line. The goal was reviewed and overturned and both teams entered halftime in a scoreless tie.

In the 54th minute of the game, the Wolverines struck when Reilly Martin played a cross in from the left wing past Ohio State goalkeeper  Kerr to an open Nicki Hernandez for the finish from six yards. Ohio State had plenty of opportunities as Kayla Fischer got off two clean shots only to have the ball deflected.

In spite of their hard play the Buckeyes 4 game winning streak came to a halt as the final score would remain 1-0. Ohio State held a 5-1 lead in corners and a 5-2 advantage in shots on frame and had 5 shots on goal.

On Sunday the Buckeyes made the trip to East Lansing on a chilly afternoon and came away with a hard fought, well deserved 1-0 victory as  Kayla Fischer found Marissa Birzon at the top of the box and the sophomore was able to dribble past a Michigan State defender and lace a left-footed shot inside the right post from 10 yards for her second goal of the season at the 51st minute point of the game.

Ohio State senior goalkeeper Kerr made a pair of saves to record her sixth shutout of the year and 17th of her career. The Buckeyes outshot the Spartans 8-2 and are  7-5-1 on the year, 4-2-1 in the Big Ten, while the Spartans drop to 5-6-3 overall, 0-5-2 in conference play. The Buckeyes will host Rutgers Friday night at 7:30.
